Ford Mustang Challenge in iRacing: Chaos, Challenge and Intense Racing

The Ford Mustang Challenge by Skip Barber, part of the D-class Road series in iRacing, stands out as one of the most engaging — and demanding — series for drivers looking for intense racing with a challenging car.

On paper, the concept is simple: one car for everyone, fixed setup, and short 15-minute races. In reality, however, the experience on track is far more complex. The combination of power, weight and handling characteristics of the Ford Mustang GT4 demands a level of control that often exceeds expectations for this license level.

In this video, the race starts from P6 and finishes in the same position. But the result alone doesn’t tell the full story. Throughout the 15-minute race, the action remains constant, with close battles and moments of tension, particularly in the opening laps where cold tires make the car unpredictable.

Despite a few isolated incidents — mostly caused by drivers losing control — the race was overall clean and competitive. This highlights one key aspect of the series: when the right group of drivers comes together, the racing can be extremely rewarding.

The Ford Mustang GT4 is central to this experience. It’s a car that demands respect. Heavy, powerful and unforgiving, it forces drivers to adopt a disciplined approach, especially early in the race. Managing traction and understanding the car’s behavior are essential to avoid mistakes and maintain consistency.

This combination creates a unique racing environment where chaos and quality coexist. And that balance is exactly what makes the Mustang Challenge one of the most compelling series in iRacing.
