The 2026 Japanese Grand Prix confirmed Mercedes’ strength, but Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s victory was far from straightforward. Starting from pole position, the Italian made a poor launch and dropped outside the top five, while Oscar Piastri took the lead in the opening laps. From that moment on, Antonelli had to rebuild his race through consistent pace and a strategic approach that ultimately defined the outcome.

The decisive moment came with Oliver Bearman’s crash, which triggered a Safety Car and reshaped the race. Antonelli capitalized on the neutralization to make his pit stop in a favorable window, rejoining the track in the lead. After the restart, he controlled the race with authority and built a margin that allowed him to manage the final laps, securing a victory based on execution and timing.

Oscar Piastri was one of the standout performers, taking the lead at the start and remaining competitive throughout the race. The McLaren driver showed strong pace and consistency to secure second place, while Charles Leclerc brought Ferrari home in third after a clean and controlled performance.

Just behind, George Russell finished fourth after his race was compromised by the timing of the Safety Car, which affected his strategy. Lando Norris completed the top five, giving McLaren a strong overall result, while Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, adding more valuable points for Ferrari in a consistent weekend.

In the remainder of the top ten, Pierre Gasly stood out by finishing seventh for Alpine, holding off Max Verstappen, who crossed the line in eighth after a weekend below his usual standards. Liam Lawson took ninth with another solid result, and Esteban Ocon completed the points positions in a race that highlighted the midfield’s competitiveness.

With this result, Mercedes reinforces its status as the benchmark at the start of the season, while Antonelli confirms his excellent form and ability to manage complex races. Suzuka was not just another win — it was proof that the young Italian is already racing with the maturity of a true title contender.
