The American city of St. Petersburg has an extensive history in the country’s motorsport scene, beginning in the mid-1980s and returning 10 years later with two different track layouts for the Trans-Am championship. In 2003, CART organized a return to the city with a modified version of the circuit by the waterfront. Later, in 2005, IndyCar made the St. Petersburg Grand Prix its first race held outside an oval track.
Since then, this event has become a staple of the competition and serves as the opening round of the IndyCar Series season.
