Andrea Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive run of form by securing pole position for the Miami Grand Prix, setting a fastest lap of 1:27.798 and claiming his third consecutive pole in Formula 1. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver edged out Max Verstappen by just 0.166 seconds, with Charles Leclerc completing the top three in a tightly contested session.
Although he was unable to improve on his final Q3 attempt, Antonelli had already done enough with his earlier lap to secure pole position, capping off a strong recovery after a difficult start to the weekend. Following a challenging Sprint and initial balance issues with the W17, Mercedes made key setup adjustments, particularly in low-speed corners, which proved crucial in unlocking one-lap performance.
Mercedes recovery and Antonelli’s consistency
The team’s progress was evident throughout qualifying, with Antonelli consistently among the fastest drivers from Q1 through to Q3. The young Italian once again demonstrated maturity and the ability to extract maximum performance under pressure, further establishing himself as one of the standout talents of the season.
"It’s been an amazing day, especially after a difficult start. I’m very happy with my lap and the team’s recovery", Antonelli said. He also highlighted the importance of his first Q3 lap, after a minor mistake on his final run prevented further improvement.
Behind him, Verstappen pushed hard until the very end but ultimately fell just short. Leclerc secured third, while Lando Norris recovered from technical issues to take fourth place.
Meanwhile, George Russell finished fifth, admitting that small mistakes cost him a potential top-three result. Nevertheless, having both Mercedes cars inside the top five highlights the team’s strong recovery after a difficult start to the weekend.
Tight field and unpredictable race ahead
Qualifying underlined just how competitive the field is, with several drivers unable to improve on their final runs, making initial Q3 laps decisive. Alpine also impressed, placing Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly inside the top ten, while drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri ended up further down the order than expected.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s race, weather forecasts suggest possible rain and thunderstorms in Miami, adding a significant element of unpredictability. These conditions could play a major role, especially as these current cars have yet to be fully tested in wet race scenarios.
Antonelli remains confident but cautious. "The goal is always to fight for the win, but we know conditions could be tricky. We need to be ready for anything", he said.
With Mercedes showing clear signs of improvement and Antonelli in top form, the Miami Grand Prix is set for an intense battle where strategy, execution and weather conditions could prove decisive.
